Payment to CalSTRS Retirees
under Economic Stimulus Legislation
The economic stimulus legislation recently signed into law by President Obama provides for a special one-time stimulus payment to state and local retirees not covered by Social SecurityThe payment is in the form of a refundable income tax credit that the state and local retirees will claim on their 2009 returns.
The amount is $250 per non-Social Security state/local retiree.
If both spouses are state/local retirees, a total credit of $500 could be claimed on a joint return. If the government retiree’s spouse is a Social Security beneficiary, the spouse would receive a $250 direct payment under another provision of the stimulus legislation and the government retiree would receive the $250 tax credit. Thus, in either case there would be a $500 benefit per couple.
